National Elementary Honor Society

SERVICE~SCHOLARSHIP~LEADERSHIP~RESPONSIBILITY

The National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS) is designed to recognize elementary students for their outstanding academic achievement and demonstrate personal responsibility, to provide meaningful service to the school and community, and to develop essential leadership skills.

Diamond Canyon is proud to have a local NEHS chapter. Incoming fifth and sixth grade students may apply for NEHS membership in April of each school year. Application details and membership requirements will be provided to students as the application date approaches.

What is NEHS:

NEHS stands for National Elementary Honor Society. NEHS promotes the four pillars of scholarship, responsibility, service, and leadership.

What is the criteria?

Maintain a 3.75 or higher which means straight A’s or one B is allowed
Must demonstrate excellent character and get positive staff recommendations

Volunteer Hours:

Each member commits to doing at minimum 2 hours of community service quarterly, which equals 8 or more hours for the school year.
- Reading with first graders
- BCHS soccer ball manager
- DC Kindergarten Night volunteer
- Ringing a Bell for the Salvation Army at Fry’s
- Making snack baskets for Daisy Mountain Fire Department
- Dog sitting or babysitting - unpaid
- Hat day/fundraiser help
- Helped organize books in classroom/library

Application process is:

Go online to the NEHS website under activities on our DC website - click on the application link
A few things to note are: You write an essay WHY you want to be in NEHS and fill out details about your leadership or involvement within the community.
You will submit two staff names to have a reference sent regarding your behavior and grades to verify you are a candidate that exhibits leadership, scholarship, service, etc.
Applications are due: April 25th at 4pm.
Will be notified if you were selected for NEHS May 5th.
Induction will take place May 19th at 4pm.

We hope you consider joining our leadership group. If you have any questions, please ask or find a NEHS member or contact the advisor, ellen.akilov@dvusd.org 24 hours PRIOR to the deadline.

Each quarter you should complete 2 volunteer hours. You can do this in segments of time such as 30 mins, 15 mins, etc. However, each quarter you should have at minimum 2 hours per NEHS national bi-laws/rules.

Quarter 1 volunteer hours are due: October 4th, 3:30pm (Hours completed by September 30th)

Quarter 2 volunteer hours are due: December 20th, 3:30pm (Hours completed by December 11th)

Quarter 3 volunteer hours are due: March 14th, 3:30pm (Hours completed by March 7th)

Quarter 4 volunteer hours are due: May 16th, 3:30pm (Hours completed and turned in by May 9th)

Submitting in a timely manner helps you remember the date and details. Therefore, submit hours at any time.

Note: Induction into NEHS is done through a NEHS Faculty Council review and based off the pillars of the National Elementary Honor Society. Applying for this organization is open to all Diamond Canyon students who qualify with the criteria listed. Submitting an application does not guarantee you will be accepted into the honor society.
