Welcome
I hope you all had a wonderful summer and are as excited to be back as I am. My goal is to do all I can to keep students and staff healthy here on campus throughout the school year!!
The 2024-2025 school year will be my 5th year as the Diamond Canyon school nurse. Prior to this, I spent 20 years in the ICU and trauma units. I have 1 child here at DC and 2 in high school.
The students here at DC have become like my extended family. I love caring for them while on campus, and I LOVE seeing them out in the community.
A couple of key points as we start the year:
Any prescribed medications to be administered at school must be accompanied by the DVUSD Doctor's Order Form, which is located under the "Forms" tab on this webpage. All prescription medications must have this form signed by a physician. Prescribed medications kept in the health office must have a pharmacy label clearly showing the student's name, dosage, instructions and expiration date.
All medication (prescription or over the counter) must be brought in to the front office by a parent. Students are not allowed to carry any prescription or over-the-counter medication with them on campus unless special accommodations are made by the parent and the nurse. Any medication found in the student's possession (without these special accommodations) will be collected and held in the nurse's office.
Nebulizer treatments are being discouraged at school by the CDC at this time due to the spread of COVID-19 virus by aerosolization. Please provide a spacer if an inhaler is to be used at school.
All medications must be picked up by a parent at the end of each school year.
Welcome back!!
Nurse Lisa
Should I go to school?
School is no place for a sick child. Their bodies need rest for healing. Please do not send your child to school if they have diarrhea, vomiting, fever, lice, rash, deep cough or a communicable disease like Covid 19, chicken pox, strep throat, pink eye, hand/foot/mouth disease, etc.
*DVUSD policy is that children must be vomit/diarrhea/fever free for 24 hours before returning to school.
A temperature of 100.0 or more qualifies as a fever, and it does not count if medication was given prior to school to bring fever down.
**Students will be sent home if they have a fever of 100.0 or greater.
Students who had lice need to be cleared by the nurse before being back on campus.
Please help to control the spread of illness.
Nut/Peanut Free Classrooms
All classrooms at Diamond Canyon are nut and peanut free areas. This includes foods processed in a factory that also processes nut-containing foods. Unfortunately, most bakery items, including cupcakes and donuts, are included in this group of foods and are therefore not allowed. To keep all of our students safe at school, baked/processed celebration treats brought to school to be shared in class must be from the snack safe list. Please see the Snack Safely website to reference list: http://snacksafely.com/safe-snack-guide/
Back to school ready?
Here are some tips to prepare for returning to school:
Are your child's immunizations up to date? If in question please speak to your health care provider. By age 5 children are required by AZ state law to have for school: 5 DPT's, 4 Polio's (IPV), 3 hepatitis, 2 MMR's, and 1 varicella. By age 12 they are required to have a Tdap and Meningitis immunization. Children are not allowed to attend school without proper immunizations, per AZ state law. AZ Dept. of Health Immunizations
Prescription Medication: must be in pharmacy-labeled packaging, brought to the front office BY A PARENT, and accompanied by a "Medical Authorization to Administer Medication" form SIGNED BY A PHYSICIAN. This can be found in the "Forms" section of this webpage. No prescription medication will be given at school without this completed form.
Over the counter Medication: must be brought to the front office BY A PARENT in its original packaging/bottle. This includes Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Cough Drops, Allergy medication, Antacids, Neosporin. A Medical Authorization to Administer Medication form will be completed by the parent and nurse with medication drop off.
Chronic health conditions: If your child has a chronic health condition, for example: anaphylactic allergy, diabetes, asthma, or seizure disorder, please find the appropriate forms on the "Forms" page of this webpage and have them completed before the start of school. Some of these forms need to be filled out by a physician. All of these forms are required to be renewed each school year online.
Hearing and vision screening will be conducted within the first few months of school on all new-to-Diamond-Canyon students as well as Kinder, First, Third, Fifth, Seventh and Special Education students. Parents/guardians will be notified of any atypical results.
